World Mental Health Day 2020

Positive mental health forms the foundation of a person’s ability to contribute to society, to cope with the normal stresses of life and maintain personal, social and emotional well-being.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), one in four people in the world will be affected by mental health issues at some point in their lives, which are among the leading causes of ill-health globally, with approximately 450 million people affected.

Being away from family, friends and traditional support networks can be lonely and isolating, and can leave people unsure where to turn to for help or support. It can be really difficult to say that you are not okay. If you are affected, reach out to a family member, friend, colleague, support network or professional for assistance.

Awareness of the importance of mental health is growing in the Gulf and there are a large number of resources and supports available. The Embassy has compiled a non-exhaustive list of some of the resources available in the UAE and Qatar.

A list of online counselling and support services, as well as phone and email supports is available from the Health Service Executive (HSE) website.

The HSE has a dedicated webpage containing advice and tips for looking after your mental health.

If you want to get in contact with us in the Embassy for any help or support, please feel free to do so.
