Visit by Jack Chambers T.D. Minister of State for Transport, Environment, Climate and Communications

Ireland’s Minister of State at the Department of Transport and the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications, Mr Jack Chambers T.D., will visit Japan from 9 to 16 March. 

His visit is part of the annual global outreach by representatives of the Irish Government for Ireland’s national day, St. Patrick’s Day. This year’s celebrations also mark ‘100 Years of Ireland in the World’; a century of our country’s engagement as an active member of the international community in the promotion of democracy, peace and security.  Minister Chambers’ visit will highlight a number of important milestones which occur this year such as the centenary of Ireland’s joining the League of Nations, the fiftieth anniversary of our accession to the then EEC and the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. 

During his visit, Minister Chambers will meet with a range of political and economic contacts, as well as with members of the Irish community and Japanese friends and supporters of numerous St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Japan. 

The Minister will also meet with Irish trade and investment partners in order to strengthen the bilateral economic relationship with Japan. On Friday 10 March, the Minister will attend the Ireland pavilion at Foodex organised by Bord Bia/The Irish Food Board.  

On Saturday 11 March, the Minister will attend the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Yokohama Motomachi. And on Sunday 12 March, he will lead the 28th Tokyo St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Omotesando Avenue, Harajuku and attend the second day of Asia’s largest celebration of Irish food, sports and culture, the ‘I Love Ireland Festival’ in Yoyogi Park.

Welcoming the visit, Ambassador of Ireland Damien Cole, said, “This visit is an opportunity to reaffirm our strong economic, political and people to people links with Japan”.

“Many St. Patrick’s Day events around Japan will be taking place for the first time in three years. We are delighted that Minister Chambers will participate in some of these activities, which attract hundreds of thousands of people. We invite everyone to join in the celebrations taking place in their locality and in major cities around Japan.”

3月9日から16日の日程で、ジャック・チェンバース 交通省 国際・道路交通・物流担当大臣 兼 環境・気候・通信省 郵政政策担当大臣が来日します。

チェンバース大臣の来日は、アイルランドのナショナルデー「セント・パトリックス・デー（3月17日）」を記念して毎年この時期にアイルランド政府閣僚が世界各地を訪問する活動の一環です。本年は、民主主義、平和、安全保障を促進する国際社会において、活動的な国として関与してきた「世界におけるアイルランドの100年」を記念する活動も兼ねています。アイルランドは本年、国際連盟（League of Nations）加盟100周年、欧州経済共同体（EEC、現在のEU）加盟50周年、聖金曜日協定締結25周年といういくつもの重要な節目を迎えます。大臣の来日はその節目にふさわしいものとなるでしょう。

チェンバース大臣は滞在中、政治・経済分野の重要関係先と幅広く会談するほか、セント・パトリックス・デー記念行事の開催に尽力されているアイリッシュ・コミュニティのメンバーや日本におけるアイルランドの友人たちと交流します。

また、食糧およびIT分野における二国間の経済関係の強化を図り、日本に事務所を構えるアイルランドの貿易・投資企業とも会談します。3月10日には、アイルランド政府食糧庁が出展する「FOODEX JAPAN 2023（第48回国際食品・飲料展）」のアイルランドパビリオンを訪問する予定です。

3月11日には「第17回セントパトリックデーパレード横浜元町」に参加します。翌12日には、原宿・表参道で開催される「第28回セントパトリックスデーパレード東京」を先導し、代々木公園で開催されるアジア最大のアイルランドの食・スポーツ・文化のフェスティバル「アイルラブアイルランド・フェスティバル」に参加します。

チェンバース大臣の来日を歓迎し、デミアン・コール駐日アイルランド大使は次のように述べています。
