As part of the Embassy’s engagement with charities and civil society organisations in Latvia, the Embassy invited two members of an Garda Síochána’s National Protection Services Bureau and Sarah Benson, Executive Director of Women’s Aid to travel to Latvia to speak at an annual conference organised by the Marta Centre, a Latvian NGO that provides support services and advocacy for victims of Domestic, Sexual, and Gender-based violence. The Irish speakers spoke on Ireland’s approach to handling cases of domestic abuse and the cooperation and partnership that is in place between the police and civil society support services. The speakers showed how Ireland’s ratification of the Istanbul Convention on action against violence against women and domestic violence support police and civil society organisations to support and cooperate to give a victim-centred approach when dealing with domestic abuse cases in Ireland. Ambassador Eimear Friel welcomed the opportunity for the speakers to highlight Ireland’s experience with ratification of the Istanbul Convention and the benefit that it brings to work of police and NGO’s alike.
