Embassy marks International Translation Day with discussion amongst Irish poets.

To mark International Translation Day and as part of the Embassy’s Women in Literature series of events, the Embassy in partnership with Literature Ireland and the National Library of Latvia hosted a panel discussion with two respected poets from Ireland, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin and Martina Evans to discuss the role that translation can play in bringing poetry to different groups of people around the world. The event also featured a very special presentation by Ambassador Eimear Friel on the life of Astrīde Ivaska, the famed Latvian poet who spent a portion of her life living in Ireland. Along with moderator Zita Kārkla, a post doc at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of University of Latvia, the audience listened to a wide-ranging discussion on poetry and translation as well as hearing readings of Eiléan and Martina’s poetry that had been compiled and translated into Latvian.
