Minister for Finance and President of the Eurogroup Paschal Donohoe visits Latvia

Minister for Finance and President of the Eurogroup Paschal Donohoe visits Latvia

The Minister for Finance of Ireland, Paschal Donohoe TD, visited Riga on 11 January 2022 in his capacity as President of the Eurogroup. The Eurogroup is an informal body where the ministers of the euro area member states discuss matters relating to their shared responsibilities related to the euro. Its main task is to ensure close coordination of economic policies among the euro area member states. It also aims to promote conditions for stronger economic growth.

In Riga, Minister Donohoe met with the Latvian Minister for Finance, Jānis Reirs. The focus of the meeting was the euro area economy and the Eurogroup’s key priorities, including the economic governance of the European Union, the next steps in completing Banking Union, and the future of the digital euro.

The Minister also participated in an online event “Eurozone Perspectives: Economic Challenges of 2022” broadcast from the European Union House. In a lively and engaging conversation with the Governor of Latvijas Banka and Member of the ECB Governing Council, Mārtiņš Kazāks, they discussed the current and long-term economic challenges and opportunities for Latvia and the euro area as a whole; the preconditions for maintaining Europe's role in the world, including sustainability issues; as well as the interaction between monetary and fiscal policies. The conversation was moderated by journalist and Riga Stradiņš university associate professor Edijs Bošs. The full discussion is available to view here.
