Application type: First time applicant born on the island of Ireland after 2005

Please note: Passport Online is the fastest way to apply for your passport. If you apply using Passport Online and meet the following criteria, you are not required to submit your child’s original birth certificate, as we will retrieve this record digitally from the General Register Office:

  • Your child’s birth was registered with the General Register Office
  • You provide your child’s PPSN
  • Your child is under joint guardianship as outlined in the birth certificate or single guardianship has been granted through a court order.

We can only begin to process the application when we receive the supporting documents.

Remember, we cannot return your original documents while the application is being processed. Please do not submit an original Irish passport. Please consider other options such as the Irish born parent’s birth certificate or naturalisation certificate, if applicable, rather than submitting your own passport.

Any supporting documents submitted will be returned within 20 working days of the passport issuing. You should not book any travel until you have all travel documents.

We need your child’s original documents but we will return these to you. Please submit:

  • Guardianship documents (if required). Guardianship and consent is a complex area - find more detailed information in our Consent for Children section
  • • If applying via paper: Full original civil birth certificate (version that includes the name(s) of the parent(s)).

Please submit one of the following documents for the Irish citizen parent:

  • A photocopy of the Irish citizen parent’s current Irish passport if this was issued before the child was born. Do not send the original.
  • The Irish-born parent’s full original civil birth certificate. The version that includes the name(s) of their parent(s). We do not accept baptismal certificates or birth certificates that do not show the name(s) of the parent(s). We do not accept laminated certificates.
    • If the parent’s name is now different to their name on the child’s birth certificate, they will need to link their identity to the child’s birth certificate. For example, they could have changed their name through marriage or divorce. We will require the original documents such as an original civil marriage certificate or the separation agreement, your judicial separation court order, or your divorce decree. This must be certified by a solicitor or by the court.
  • The Irish citizen parent’s original naturalisation certificate OR original Foreign Birth Registration Certificate OR original Post Nuptial Certificate.

One of the parents of my child was a British citizen at the time of my child’s birth

Remember, we cannot return your original documents while the application is being processed. Please do not submit an original Irish passport. Please consider other options such as a birth certificate from a parent born in Northern Ireland, if applicable, rather than submitting your own passport.

We need your child’s original documents but we will return these to you. Please submit:

  • Guardianship documents (if required). Guardianship and consent is a complex area - find more detailed information in our Consent for Children section
  • If applying via paper: Full original civil birth certificate (version that includes the name(s) of the parent(s)).

Please submit one of the following documents for your British citizen parent:

  • Original British passport issued before the birth of the child. We cannot accept a photocopy. The citizenship section should state British Citizen, not British Subject.
  • The parent’s full original civil birth certificate if they were born on the island of Ireland. The version that includes the name(s) of their parent(s). We do not accept baptismal certificates or birth certificates that do not show the name(s) of the parent(s). We do not accept laminated certificates.
    • If the parent’s name is now different to their name on the child’s birth certificate, they will need to link their identity to the child’s birth certificate. Remember, we cannot return your original documents while the application is being processed. Please do not submit your original passport. Consider other options such as a national identity card from an EU Member State, if applicable, rather than submitting your own passport. 

Any supporting documents submitted will be returned within 20 working days of the passport issuing. You should not book any travel until you have all travel documents.

We need your child’s original documents but we will return these to you. Please submit:

  • Guardianship documents (if required). Guardianship and consent is a complex area - find more detailed information in our Consent for Children section
  • If applying via paper: Full original civil birth certificate (version that includes the name(s) of the parent(s)).

We need your (the parent’s) original documents but we will return these to you. Please submit:

  • Original National ID card or original passport of the EU citizen parent.
  • Parent’s proof of residency in Ireland for 3 of the 4 years before the child’s birth.
    • Tax records (P60 / P45 / P35L / Employment Detail Summary ONLY) for each year showing at least 35 weeks insurable employment.  If less than 35 weeks please submit additional documents for remaining months of the year.
    • Notice of Assessment / Self Assessment records for each year and supporting documentation e.g. Bank Statements / Domestic bills for each month
    • Letter from Social Welfare/Intreo confirming type of benefit payment you received and the dates to and from when the benefit was paid directly to you, this must be accompanied by a photocopy of your PPS card front and back
    • Rent Lease (must include Contract page and Signature of the Parent whose residency we are considering) with receipts / utility bills/ rent book to confirm payments for each month
    • Bank Statements for each month showing regular transactions in and out of the account
    • School/College letters confirming dates of attendance, full time courses undertaken and proof of exam results
    • Declaration Form A: This is a sworn statement by the parent, giving details of their period of residency in Ireland. Please ensure that:
      • The word Father or Mother is deleted as appropriate from page 1 of the form;
      • The EU member State (the country of origin ) should also be specified;
      • The dates of Residency should include month(s) and year(s) both From and To;
      • The form is witnessed by one of the witnesses listed on the back of the form. It cannot be witnessed by a member of An Garda Siochána.

Your child may not qualify for an Irish passport if you lived in Ireland while:

  • Having an application for refugee status determined
  • Study or training purpose
  • Periods of unlawful residence or
  • Where your child’s parent had diplomatic immunity at the time of the birth 

We need your child’s original documents but we will return these to you. Please submit:

  • If applying via paper: Full original civil birth certificate (version that includes the name(s) of the parent(s)).

We need your (the parent’s) original documents but we will return these to you. Please submit:

  • Original national passport of the parent showing residency stamps for 3 of the previous 4 years before the child is born. You can submit an expired passport as well.
  • The Parent’s GNIB (Garda National Immigration Bureau) card / IRP (Irish Residence Permit) card.
  • A summary statement, signed by parent of parent’s ‘permission to remain’ stamps in the passport. The summary (click here to download the template) should include:
    • Number of the passport.
    • Name of passport holder.
    • Description of the stamp(s).
    • Dates of the permission.

Remember, we cannot return your original documents while the application is being processed. The passport and Irish Residence Permit of the parent will be returned within 20 working days of the passport issuing. You should not book any travel until you have all travel documents.

Your child may not qualify for an Irish passport if you lived in Ireland while:

  • Having an application for refugee status determined
  • Study or training purpose
  • Periods of unlawful residence or
  • Where your child’s parent had diplomatic immunity at the time of the birth

  • If applying via paper: Full original civil birth certificate (version that includes the name(s) of the parent(s)).

  • The original letter from the Department of Justice declaring the parent's refugee status before the child was born
  • The parent's original passport or travel document.
  • The parent's original Irish Residence Permit or GNIB card.
