‘Women and the Making of Joyce’s Ulysses’ Exhibition

In celebration of Ulysses100, the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Irish Consulate in Austin partnered with the Harry Ransom Center for Humanities at the University of Texas in Austin, in support of its exhibition ‘Women and the Making of Joyce’s Ulysses’.
Curated by Dr. Clare Hutton of Loughborough University, Women and the Making of Joyce’s Ulysses, marks this centenary year by exploring the important role of women in bringing the book to publication.
Drawing on the Center’s James Joyce collection, the exhibition shares the story of the formative role of Joyce’s family members on his writing, and in particular, the role of other four women in Joyce’s life, Margaret Anderson, Jane Heap, Harriet Shaw Weaver, and Sylvia Beach, each of whom helped with the success of Ulysses.
More than 150 rare objects make up the exhibition, including a first edition of Ulysses, page proofs for its first printing, original copies of The Little Review, manuscripts in Joyce’s hand, rare books, printed ephemera, and photographs.
Alongside ‘Women and the Making of Ulysses’, Ambassador of Ireland to the United States, Daniel Mulhall, delivered a talk on ‘Molly, Gerty and Mrs. Breen, the Women of Ulysses’ on 29 April in the Ransom Center to Irish community members, academics and local Joyceans.
The exhibition continues to run until July 17th.
