Visit to Japan by Irish State Minister for Planning and Local Government, Mr Peter Burke T.D.

Ireland’s State Minister for Planning and Local Government, Mr Peter Burke, will visit Japan from 13-16 March.

His visit is part of the annual global outreach by representatives of the Irish Government for Ireland’s national day, St. Patrick’s Day. The central message of this year’s St Patrick’s Day is that Ireland, in the wake of the pandemic, is reopening, is reconnecting with our communities at home and overseas, and also with the people of Ukraine.

The St. Patrick’s Day events this year are tempered by the reminder that democracy and the rule of law can never be taken for granted. This year, in particular, is an opportunity to recall and to extol human fellowship, empathy and solidarity, as Irish people at home and around the world, stand together with the people of Ukraine.

This year, Irish Government Ministers will travel to more than 33 countries. Minister Burke will meet with a range of important political, economic and cultural contacts while in Japan. He will also meet members of the Irish community and friends of Ireland who support the celebrations.

On 15 March, Minister Burke will hold a bilateral meeting with his Japanese counterpart, State Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Mr Norihiro Nakayama.

A number of meetings will be held with Irish trade and investment partners in order to strengthen Ireland’s bilateral economic relationship with Japan.

Minister Burke’s visit will also support a wide range of Ireland-Japan links and activities in the agricultural area and he will meet JRA President, Mr Masayuki Goto and visit the JRA Miho Training Centre in Ibaraki.

Looking forward to his visit to Japan, Minister Burke said:

“Ireland and Japan enjoy very close and friendly relations, based on historic ties and shared values. I am looking forward to advancing those ties and marking the occasion of our national day with the Irish community in Japan and with our many Japanese friends and business networks. However, this year, we mark St. Patrick’s Day with solidarity rather than celebration and we express our Irish identity by re-asserting our unequivocal commitment to democratic and humanitarian values as we stand with the people of Ukraine.”

Welcoming Minister Burke’s visit, the Ambassador of Ireland to Japan, Mr Paul Kavanagh, said:

“The visit of Minister Burke to Japan is another important step in developing Ireland’s relationship with Japan in the political, economic and people-to-people domains, and I look forward to welcoming him to Tokyo for a rich and diverse programme of engagements. This year, the Minister’s visit to Japan will provide an opportunity to further strengthen links between Ireland and Japan, while also marking our national day in a way which reflects the solidarity and support which Irish people all over world feel at this time towards the people of Ukraine”.
