Joint Communique on the Implementation of the Maputo Accord for Peace and Reconciliation

We, partners contributing to the basket fund for implementation of the Maputo Accord for Peace and Reconciliation*, affirm our clear and strong support for definitive peace in Mozambique.

We salute the resolve of both Parties to implement the Maputo Accord and deepen their respectful and constructive dialogue. The start of disarmament and demobilisation of Renamo ex-combatants is a long awaited and concrete expression of this resolve. It is an important step on the path to peace and reconciliation, bringing social, economic and political benefits to Mozambique.

The international community (Switzerland, Canada, the European Union, Norway, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland and Botswana) is providing funding to support this historic opportunity for peace in Mozambique. US$18.3 million has been mobilised for the peace process to date, including US$8.9 million for phase 1 and US$9.4 million for a basket fund administered by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in collaboration with the Peace Process Secretariat to support the Implementation of the Maputo Accord for Peace and Reconciliation. This Fund was established to ensure 1) a peace infrastructure exists to support the full implementation of the Maputo Accord for Peace and Reconciliation and 2) disarmament and demobilisation of Renamo ex-combatants is completed as per Memorandum of Understanding and a Reintegration Concept agreed collaboratively. A central feature is ensuring ex-combatants receive necessary support in the transition towards their reintegration into the community.

We stand firm in our commitment to contribute to a definitive peace and sustainable development in Mozambique.
