Ambassador joins Slovak President in support of global activism to prevent and eliminate violence

Ahead of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, 25th November, Ambassadors accredited to the Slovak Republic, including the Ambassador of Ireland Dermot McGauran, join President Zuzana Čaputová, in a campaign to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls.

Advice for Fans of Shamrock Rovers

Statement by the Diplomatic Community to mark the 10th anniversary of the Istanbul Convention

Today marks the 10th Anniversary of the Istanbul Convention. Signed on 11 May 2011, this landmark convention of the Council of Europe aims to prevent and combat violence against women and domestic violence. It is the first instrument in Europe to set legally binding standards to prevent gender-based violence, protect victims of violence and punish perpetrators.
St Patrick’s Day Greenings 2021

Embassy of Ireland supports the “Orange the World” campaign

It has become a tradition for Ireland to support the launch of the UN’s 16 days against violence against women and girls campaign, also called “Orange the World”, and this year the Embassy led on the campaign in Slovakia.
Ambassador tried online education

Ambassador Ó Riain accepted an offer from the University of Economics to give a lecture on diplomacy in practice to their students. She was able to experience the current trend of online education with many interesting questions coming from students through a screen.
Green Žilina welcomes Irish Ambassador

Žilina joined the Global Greening campaign in 2020 when Budatín castle and the historical building of the Bank turned green for St. Patrick’s day. The pandemic prevented the Ambassador from travelling to the sites in March, but an opportunity presented itself 6 months later.
Ambassador launches diplomatic travel podcast

The Slovak Spectator, the main English language newspaper in Slovakia, introduced a Spectacular Slovakia podcast. Foreign Ambassadors based in Bratislava speak about their favourite places in Slovakia, and compare their host country with their homeland. Ambassador Ó Riain was the first one to record her story. Joint Statement of the Diplomatic Community on equal rights for LGBTI

A joint statement on equal rights for LGBTI signed by 37 embassies (one more than last year). In addition, the mayor of Bratislava, Matus Vallo and the governor of Bratislava Region, Juraj Droba, have signed the statement, making it a total of 39 signatories.

President’s inauguration Inauguration ceremony of President Čaputová Ambassador Ó Riain joined fellow diplomats, members of government and parliament, academia and many others at the historical inauguration of the first female President in Slovakia. Ambassador Ó Riain congratulated President Čaputová at a reception following the official ceremony.
The Embassy of Ireland supports employment of Roma

Slovakia faces both a labour shortage and high unemployment of Roma population. The Embassy joined forces with AmCham, Embassies of the US, Netherlands and Canada and several NGOs as they believe that the employment of socially excluded groups is an untapped potential for Slovakia’s growth.
