On 17th September 2021 President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina visited the Vatican.  The President had a private meeting with Pope Francis, after which the Pope greeted Sabina and the members of the President's delegation.  President Higgins also met with H.E. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See's Secretary of State, and H.E. Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Holy See's Secretary for Relations with States.  Ambassador Derek Hannon was honoured to accompany the President to the Vatican.

This was the third meeting between President Higgins and Pope Francis, after the President's 2017 visit to the Vatican and the Pope's 2018 visit to Áras an Úachtaráin.
