Bloomsday 2018 in Spain & other events


The Bloomsday Society in Madrid will celebrate Bloomsday in the Ateneo de Madrid on Friday 15th June, from 7-9pm. The evening will include a selection of readings from Joyce, live music from Irish group Púca Óg, and there will also be a special tribute to Pamela O’Malley, the Irish teacher and educationist who lived in Madrid for many years and died in 2006. Bloomsday at Desperate Literature bookshop in Madrid will take place on Saturday, June 16, from 20-23h. 

The 8th annual Bloomsday Reading and Bathe on the Beach  will be held on Saturday 16 June at the beach in Fuengirola

The Sant Vicent GAA club  and the Valencia Irish Cultural Association have joined forces this year to mark the occasion – the GAA have their annual open day in Polideportivo Quatre Carreres on Saturday June 16 and this will be followed by a special Bloomsday lunch menu, accompanied by readings from Joyce, poetry in English and Irish, and an introduction to the Irish language. This will be a family friendly event, and later that day there will be music and dancing in St. Patrick's Irish bar. For more details please consult here.

The 5th annual Bloomsday celebrations in Zaragoza will take place on Friday 15 June at 19.30 in the central patio of the Paraninfo building at the Universidad de Zaragoza (Plaza Basilio Paraíso, 4). There will be readings and live music from the group Celtic Airs.

Bloomsday celebrations in Bilbao will take place on on Saturday 16 June, starting in Café Dublín at 11am. For more details please see here -

Other events of interest

Irish poet John Liddy will be launching his latest publication, Madrid & other poems, at Booksellers, Santa Engracia 115, on June 8 at 20h. Puca Óg will add some music and song to the event. John will also be signing copies at the Feria de Libro on the 9 June between 12 – 14h, in Caseta 38 Booksellers.

The Yeats Society in Madrid will be celebrating Yeats Day 2018 on Wednesday 13 June in Café Moliere (Francisco Silvela 20) at 20.30h. Everyone is invited along to the informal gathering to read your favourite poem by W. B. Yeats.
