Students and teachers from the Grund- und Werkrealschule (GWRS) Villingendorf engaged in a lively Q&A with Deputy Head of Mission John Lynam at the Embassy on 28 June 2022. The enterprising young minds are the driving force behind the Irlandklasse project, which raises funds every year for a trip to Ireland through an online shop.

On 14 May 2022, the Forschungs- und Arbeitsgemeinschaft Irland (FAI e.V.) of the German Association of Philatelists celebrated the 40th anniversary of its founding. Deputy Head of Mission John Lynam was invited to speak at this distinguished occasion, where he underlined the important role of stamp collecting in building Irish-German and international friendships.

The Embassy had the honour of welcoming Donal O’Byrne as invited speaker for the Irish Friday Club on 6 May 2022. Donal works as product manager for the Berlin-based software engineering company Squareball Digital and as event manager for the annual St. Patricksfest in Berlin.

For our Irish Friday Club on 8 April 2022 we heard from Morgan Smyth as our invited speaker. Morgan is the owner and operator of Badfish Bar in Berlin. He talked about his experiences in gastronomy and how he navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our Irish Friday Club on 11 February saw an informative and insightful talk by Margaret Haverty, PhD candidate in Historical and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Tübingen. Margaret spoke about the challenges and opportunities facing the Irish community in Germany during the ongoing COVID pandemic.

The Ambassador of Ireland to Germany, Dr. Nicholas O’Brien, paid an official visit and had the honour of being welcomed to the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg for a day of high-level engagements with both the First Mayor of Hamburg and the Speaker of the Hamburgische Bürgerschaft.

Following the success of Brigid Meets Berlin in 2019, 2020 and 2021, the Embassy of Ireland in Germany and the Consulate General of Ireland in Frankfurt am Main, in cooperation with Literature Ireland, present Brigidsfest, a new showcase of female literary talent whose books are yet to be published in the German language.
2022 Back for Business Programme – Fostering entrepreneurial activity among returned Irish emigrants

This free initiative helps returned emigrants who have lived abroad for at least a year and have returned to Ireland within the last three years, or will soon return home, to start and develop businesses in Ireland based on a business idea.

The Embassy had the honour of welcoming Hannah Barkhoff, who works for the Irish semi-state agency Bord Bia, as invited speaker for our Irish Friday Club series on 10 December 2021. In her talk, Hannah detailed the focus of her work, which is the promotion of Irish beef and lamb products in the German, Austrian and Swiss markets.

Eddie spoke in detail about his formative career steps in Germany and the specifics of doing business in an Irish-German investment context.

The exhibition "The Children from Operation Shamrock" was opened in Lüneburg on 9 September. First Secretary, Mr Patrick Jacques, delivered a speech there on behalf of the Embassy of Ireland, thanking the organisers and emphasising the historic and contemporary importance of "Operation Shamrock".

On 22 April 2021, the Embassy in Berlin had the honour of commemorating the opening of the first Irish representation in Germany one hundred years ago.Dr. Darragh Gannon (Queen’s University of Belfast) delivered his lecture entitled “Gallant Allies in Europe, a Century of Ireland – German relations” in which he reflected on Nancy Wyse Power’s work in a cosmopolitan Berlin marked by upheaval.

The Embassy had the honour of welcoming Tara Erraught, an internationally renowned opera singer and mezzo-soprano, as invited speaker for the Irish Friday Club on 1 April 2021. Ms. Erraught talked about her passion for singing, her formative years, and her life on and off the stage as an opera singer for the Bayerische Staatsoper.
